Aptima is a market leader in optimizing human performance within complex, mission-critical systems.  Aptima is offering this part-time, onsite summer internship in the Woburn, MA office for a law student pursuing a career in Intellectual Property Law, particularly Patent Law.  The candidate would work alongside other IP team members under the mentorship of Aptima's IP Counsel and assist with a variety of projects related to patent prosecution with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and other intellectual property matters. The objectives of the position are to:

  • Provide challenging, real-world IP experience at an entrepreneurial and highly technical company.
  • Provide tactical responsibilities that exposes the intern first-hand to the experiences of an in-house IP attorney.
  • Provide practical work experience in understanding and applying patent law fundamentals.
  • Provide practical work experience assisting with prosecution activities associated with patent and trademark applications.  In particular, students will be exposed to and be expected to contribute to patent prosecution activities such as drafting patent applications and drafting patent office correspondence.
  • Provide practical work experience related to calendaring/docketing and keeping company files.

Minimum Requirements:

  • US Citizen
  • Minimum of one year of law school, with strong writing and an intention to study IP and Patent Law subjects (a writing sample will be requested should your resume be selected for next steps).
  • Candidates must possess the basic skills and technical qualifications (e.g., a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or Mathematics) entailed in becoming a Patent Attorney.
  • Experience, and a strong interest, in the technology areas of software, artificial intelligence and mathematical modeling. Experience and interest in cognitive sciences is also beneficial.
  • Technical work experience is highly valued, especially industry experience in designing and developing software related products and services.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with people of all levels and ability to function in a team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills; must be able to identify problems, recommend solutions and carry out actions in an effective manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects and prioritize work without missing critical deadlines.
