Aptima currently has an opening for a Data Scientist/Applied Mathematician who will define and apply a variety of innovative computational modeling approaches in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Human-Computer Interaction. Job Summary:

  • The Research Engineer is primarily responsible for leading scientific and technical work that responds to marketplace needs and that is of high quality and delivered in a timely manner to meet customer needs. 

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design, development and application of data mining, statistical analysis, machine learning, modeling, and signal processing methods.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, within an agile development environment, to implement, test, and apply mathematical algorithms from research.
  • Collaborate with research psychologists and scientists in experiment design and validation exercises.
  • Engage in business development activities, proposal writing, project management, and customer interaction.
  • Successfully design and implement the scientific and technical aspects of projects and proposals.
  • Lead in the execution of technical tasks under projects and proposals, resulting in work that is timely and of high quality.
  • Contribute significantly to and/or lead the production of Aptima technical reports, proposals, presentations, and published papers. May serve as lead author.
  • Lead project and proposal teams in the Project/Proposal Manager role, collaborating between teams and Divisions as necessary.
  • May successfully design the technical and scientific aspects of a project in the PI role.
  • Support more senior staff through the application of technical knowledge by contributing to proposals, participating in capabilities briefs, preparing software or meeting materials, integrating/installing software, meeting with customers, etc.
  • Continue education in own professional domain (conferences, reading). Take initiative to do background reading and/or other forms of professional development related to project needs and technical areas.
  • Present work at professional conferences and/or in professional publications.
  • Conduct all work in accordance with contractual compliance and all laws, keeping in alignment with the core values of Aptima.
  • Perform other such duties as may be required.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Sustained record of expertly addressing most or all requirements of subordinate titles. Demonstrated technical and leadership ability to take on this level of requirements.
  • Possesses general understanding of multiple technical domains relevant to Aptima, with a primary focus on a specialty that is integrated with other domains at Aptima.

 Minimum Requirements for Position:

  • U.S. Citizens only
  • Minimum of a Master's degree in a computational discipline (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or Natural Language Processing).
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience
  • In-depth understanding and hands-on experience developing and implementing machine learning techniques
  • Proficiency with scripting programming languages (e.g. Python, R)
  • Experience working with large, noisy, multi-modal datasets
  • Excellent communications skills (verbal and written), which will be examined by providing a "job talk" during the interview process as well as providing publications or written work samples

 Any of the following would be a plus:

  • Experience with Jupyter Notebook, TensorFlow, PyTorch
  • Familiarity with object-oriented programming languages (e.g., Java, C#, C++)
  • Experience with techniques for parallel, distributed computing over big data
  • Knowledge of software/data design methods, data structures, and modeling standards
  • Journal and/or other refereed publications
  • Current security clearance at the Secret level or above

 Working Conditions (ADA accommodations may be sought):

  • Business travel will be required, oftentimes to military sites.
  • Unless otherwise agreed to in writing or authorized under policies of the Company, the employee must report each working day to one of Aptima's places of business to conduct their employment activities.  All use of leave time and Aptima's work-at-home policy shall be reasonable and within the intended scope of the policy.
  • All commutes to an employee's assigned Aptima place of business will be made without expectation of travel per diem.
