Research Engineer: Human-Autonomy Teaming


Aptima is a fast-paced, employee-focused small business that excels in finding solutions to complex problems in human-centered engineering. Aptima has an opening for an experienced, creative research engineer to join our Interactive Intelligent Systems (I2S) research group. I2S is a multi-disciplinary group exploring the design of analytics, interfaces, and systems at the frontier of human-machine collaboration across a range of domains, including information analysis, command and control, cybersecurity, and problem-solving. In this position you will:

  • Contribute to the design of collaborative human-machine systems, including:
    • Data collection, measurement, and analysis approaches;
    • Data visualization, user interfaces, and user experiences;
    • Systems that integrate visual analytic solutions to enable decision-making.
  • Contribute to research studies that assess our collaborative human-machine systems, including:
    • Computational performance of measurement and analysis approaches;
    • Usability and usefulness of visualizations, interfaces, and experiences;
    • Utility and comparative performance of integrated systems.
  • Contribute to collaborative research and development processes, including:
    • Design sprints and code reviews;
    • Evangelizing scientific and technical approaches;
    • Crafting proposals, managing projects, engaging customers, and publishing findings.

Minimum requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline, including but not limited to, computer science, cognitive science, statistics, mathematics, human factors, I/O psychology or geography
  • Experience working on distributed, collaborative teams
  • Experience working on research-oriented projects
  • Willingness to travel minimum of 25% of the time

The ideal candidate will have two or more of the following:

  • Design Experience
    • Experience with UI/UX design methods, with a focus on interactive data exploration.
    • Experience with end-user engagement and feedback methods (knowledge elicitation).
    • Experience with prototyping methods, such as Google Venture's Design Sprint.
  • Software Engineering Experience
    • Experience developing web-based applications with modern tools (our platform supports HTML 5, JavaScript [Angular], CSS, Scala, Java, Python, and R).
    • Experience using software development tools (Git, Jira, etc.) and Agile methods.
    • Experience with NoSQL databases, especially graph DBs (Janus), and query languages.
  • Research Experience
    • Knowledge of human-computer interaction, visual analytics, data journalism, human factors, and cognitive science research (among others).
    • Evaluating complex sociotechnical systems, including designs and implementations.
    • Exposure to statistical methods, especially those related to exploratory data analysis.
  • Communications Experience
    • Writing publications for conferences, journals, etc. based on research findings.
    • Documenting research and technical methods in user guides and technical reports.
    • Writing proposals and/or grant applications.
